Emmitsburg Considers Signs Changes

Updated: May 9, 2019

By Lisa May

The Town of Emmitsburg is currently accepting feedback on a sweeping revision of its current signage regulations. These changes are aimed at modernizing the Town’s code and addressing legal changes as a result of a 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision.

While many of the proposed changes would be considered business-friendly, the current draft would impose changes for the real estate industry. For example, signs posted on residentially-zoned parcels for more than 30 days would require a permit, a schematic drawing of the sign, and an estimate of the length of time the sign would be displayed. FCAR has been in discussions with Town Staff on how to modify this requirement to better meet the needs of residents and REALTORS® during the home sales process.

You can provide your feedback on the ordinance during the Town’s public outreach sessions on April 22 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (residential) and April 29 from 9 a.m. to Noon (commercial).

Additional information on the sign ordinance, including the full text and a side-by-side comparison of current and proposed regulations, can be found on the Emmitsburg Town Web Site.
